Heights Recreation Center will celebrate the grand opening of its new building at 5 p.m. Tuesday 5/28. The event is open to the public and will include a ribbon cutting, dedication of the “Rocket” sculpture and self-guided tours of the new facility.
The 25,000-square-foot building provides more space for the classes and programs offered in old location and features a regulation-sized basketball court, dedicated game room, updated locker rooms and much more.
The new Family Aquatic Center, which is set to open this summer and located next door to the recreation center, will include modern aquatics amenities such as a zero-entry pool with splash playground, current channel, vortex pool, instructional water, lap swim, play features for a variety of ages, a double flume slide and shade structures.
Both facilities are funded through the 2010 Bond Program and are designed to fit with the surrounding neighborhoods’ midcentury modern architecture. The new rec center is designed to be certified as LEED silver.

“We have been working on our yard since we bought the home back in 2007. The fall of 2010 we had the stamped concrete put in and then my sister did the landscape. Since then I have just tended to it and I have added blooming perennials like the dianthus, coral bells also known as heuchera and I have a few varieties of flowering clematis vine as well as hostas and ferns. Our big project last year was getting the fence stained. We did it mostly ourselves and when I had a bad spell I paid a neighbor boy to fill in for me. We added the rain barrels to collect rain water from our gutters back in 2011 when the draught began and we use that to keep things green while still obeying the water restrictions. Thank you all again for choosing our yard. We do it for ourselves because we love it and love looking at it and enjoy the birds; we have even begun to attract some hummingbirds.”
As always, you can view the Yard of the Month archives here or nominate a yard yourself.
